Welcome to Data: Made Not Found. This is brought to you by danah boyd, a partner researcher at Microsoft Research and the founder/president of Data & Society. I have just spent four years learning how census data are made - after a decade of studying privacy, algorithms, “big data”, and AI. This newsletter will be a home for stories and reflections, observations and travails. There will be esoteric accountings of data infrastructures, radical proposals for bureaucratic transformation, and textured stories of people and practices that often go unnoticed.
